HIGHWAYS AND GLOBALIZATION

چکیده
This article quantifies the value of U.S. highways. We develop a multisector general equilibrium model with many locations in United States (i.e., counties) and countries. In model, producers choose shipping routes subject to domestic international trade costs, endogenous congestion, port efficiency at transshipment points. Applying we find that removing Interstate Highway System reduces real GDP by $421–$578 billion. The results highlight gains from intersectoral as well role transportation infrastructure shaping regional comparative advantage.

Spending and Funding for Highways
The nation’s network of highways plays a vital role in the U.S. economy; private commercial activity and people’s daily lives depend on that transportation infrastructure. In 2007, the public sector spent $146 billion to build, operate, and maintain highways in the United States. About three-quarters of that total was provided by state and local governments. One-quarter was provided by the fede...

IN T R O D U C T IO N More than 76,000 miles of roads are under county control in Indiana—a responsibility for county road authorities which almost defies measurement. The magnitude of the task is indicated, however, by two factors: annual expenditures, which in 1958 totaled over $40 million, and employment, which totaled several thousand persons. This responsibility places great problems on th...
متن کاملHighways for mRNA Transport
Two new studies reveal the role of microtubule polarity in the asymmetric localization of mRNAs. In this issue of Cell, Zimyanin et al. (2008) show that the asymmetric localization of oskar mRNA in fruit fly oocytes results from a slight bias in the direction of its transport. Meanwhile, Messitt et al. (2008) reporting in Developmental Cell find a subpopulation of microtubules that is critical ...
متن کاملConstructing Optimal Highways
For two points p and q in the plane, a straight line h, called a highway, and a real v > 1, we define the travel time (also known as the city distance) from p and q to be the time needed to traverse a quickest path from p to q, where the distance is measured with speed v on h and with speed 1 in the underlying metric elsewhere. Given a set S of n points in the plane and a highway speed v, we co...

is one of ten regional units mandated by Congress and established in Fall 1988 to support research, education, and training in surface transportation. The UC Center serves federal Region IX and is supported by matching grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation, the California Department of Transportation (Cattrans), and the University. Based on the Berkeley Campus, UCTC draws upon exist...
